Preventive Dental Care

Our Preventive Dentistry services help you to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Preventing these can keep you from spending more money and time later on to correct any problems that may arise from these very preventable problems. We believe that the very first step to having (and keeping) healthy teeth and gums is to prevent problems.
Cleaning, Exam, and X-rays:
For a healthy mouth and smile, we recommend cleanings twice a year. Our dentists may recommend more frequent visits with more special needs. All our patients will receive periodontal disease screenings, oral cancer screening, and a comprehensive exam.
What is done during Cleaning?
-
Removal of Tartar/Calculus: Tartar/Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Tartar/Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
-
Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins that inflame the gums. This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease!
-
Teeth polishing: Remove stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing.
A comprehensive exam is recommended once a year. A comprehensive exam is highly recommended to prevent mouth pain or infections, tooth decay or tooth loss.
A complete set of x-rays is the first step in a thorough dental examination. We use x-rays to find cavities between your teeth, tartar on the roots, worn out fillings, receding bone levels caused by periodontal disease and other conditions we can not find with a clinical exam alone. Without x-rays, we would’t be able to detect these problems until they had become severe and damage has occurred.
Routine dental exams, cleaning and x-rays are all important for a beautiful and healthy smile.
Sealants to prevent dental decay:
A sealant is a thin, plastic coating painted on the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars (the teeth directly) in front of the molars). Sealants have been shown to be highly effective in the prevention of cavities.
